New Years Resolutions Should Be For A Lifetime, Not One Year

Every New Years Day on January 1st, people are determined to make resolutions, goals, objectives, targets - whatever you may refer to them as. These include quitting smoking, cutting down on booze, exercising more and be more healthy, stuff like that.

As for myself, I just don't see why I should tie my goals to one year. I have never been tempted or eager to make resolutions and I don't see why I should; I know I won't fully commit to something that I know will take years to achieve and fulfill, as it'll take more persistence, perseverance and dedication to make that happen. It takes several steps along the way, just to get to where you want to be. I'd rather it happened that way than to set a short -term goal and not see it through. Although it really depends on a) what the goal is and b) the circumstances that you are in and where you are at the moment, because not everyone will be at the same stage as yourself. Not every one will be like you as they have different motivations, expectations and circumstances. Financially, socially, personally-wise.

Me personally, it becomes a waste of time and should I not meet my target, I would (probably) feel even more guilty and bad about myself. And that is not something that anyone, or everyone should experience and wish upon themselves.

....or the month of January

Perhaps instead of making new years resolutions, create an action plan stating where you are now, the current mood you are in, as well as where you see yourself 2, 3, maybe 6 years from now with some set goals planned. I think if you think and look too further ahead in 10 or 20 years, then you are just focusing too much on what will happen much later, when frankly, one can't tell or know what the future may hold for you in 10, 20 years.

Another thing about resolutions is that sometimes it is far easier for people who talk the talk, but can't and never walk the walk: there is a fine line between talking about doing something and actually doing it and talking about doing something -, but never getting round to doing it. That's the difference.

So the advice is, if you want to set targets or objectives, make them lifetime objectives. And it's not a problem that it can and will take a long time to accomplish them. Take your time, take each step as it comes and don't rush.

Why? Because life is a long journey - it is not a 100 metre sprint, and as you get older, you learn more about yourself and the type of person you are and want to be. As well as looking after and taking care of yourself, physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and as importantly to feel happy on the inside and outside. As long as you do those things, then you shouldn't need to think of doing everything you want doing, all in one year. Because that is sometimes (nearly) impossible, it's too much and rather unnecessary. & in doing so you are putting a lot of pressure on yourself.

But anyhow, have a happy and good 2016 and may your year(s) be filled with lots of joy and happiness.
