19 Of My Personal Favourite Comedy Movies of The 1990s

Home Alone (1990) - Christmas comedy caper that doesn't wear out its appeal, 20 + years on; though it can get a little too sappy for one's taste in certain places

Jingle All The Way (1996) - For me, the funniest Arnie movie, so many great gags, slapstick jokes and scenes

Boomerang (1992) - second Eddie Murphy rom- com helping after Coming to America, this one is just as entertaining, if not as humourous as that movie

Wayne's World (1992) - before Austin Powers came Wayne Campbell and his friend, Garth Elgar. I'd take this over Austin Powers, any day

Fathers' Day (1997) - my favourite Robin Williams comedy movie as stated many times over on this blog, and one that I love more than Mrs Doubtfire. Overlooked on its original release and just as hysterical, silly and funny as the latter, thanks to Robin's antics

The Birdcage (1996) - with a star turn by Nathan Lane, this Hollywood remake of Las Cages Aux Foiles is still fabulous

My Cousin Vinny (1992) - Joe Pesci movie when he's not a raging little psycho killer. Courtroom comedy with some good moments and a show-stopping turn from Marisa Tomei

Ace Ventura (1992) - Jim Carrey breakout hit of 1992, and this along with The Mask, Dumb and Dumber were the perfect vehicles for his brand of manic, loud, boisterous comedy

Liar Liar (1997) - yet another Jim Carrey movie, though with this one his character, Fletcher Reede is a lot more toned down in contrast to his other comedy character roles. and that alone works so well for Liar Liar. One of Carrey's best-ever movies.

Wrongfully Accused (1998) - bombed on general release, this is an at times highly amusing slapstick comedy starring Leslie Nielsen. Plenty of jokes and gags, if you loved Airplane and Naked Gun, then you'll enjoy this

Beverly Hills Ninja (1997) - simple story and plot, but it's the silly and laugh out loud antics and dumb foolery of Chris Farley that makes this comedy worth seeing. If you love G-rated, family friendly slapstick comedy, this is for you

Mars Attacks (1996) - homage to 1950s sci-fi movies with an all star casting featuring Glenn Close, Jack Nicholson, Danny Devito and erm, Tom Jones as the US is under attack from Aliens from another planet. Occasionally amusing with a quirky twist, thanks to Tim Burton

Kindergarten Cop (1990) - light-hearted comedy with Arnold Schwarzenegger showing off his comedic and humorous side of his talents, along with great support by Penelope Ann Miller and Pamela Reed.

Austin Powers: Man of Mystery (1997) - probably the only Austin Powers movie I thoroughly enjoyed. Typical comedy farce from Mike Myers, with a spoof on British spy movies

Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) - an underrated gem that has some nice surprises; technically, it is a dark comedy that kind of has a romantic comedy subplot built in. That subplot, performances and the action sequences are what make this movie worth seeing, more so than for everything else.

Soapdish (1991) - another underrated effort, with Sally Field on fine form and great performances from the rest of the cast in this screwball caper. The ensemble casting is just awesome in itself: Field, Kevin Kline, Whoopi Goldberg, Elizabeth Shue, Robert Downey Jr., Teri Hatcher and the equally amusing Cathy Moriarty. So hilarious and hysterical, it makes you laugh until your insides hurt

Bowfinger (1999) - never been into Steve Martin's efforts of the 1990s, but this one that came right before the turn of the millennium is just brilliant. The comedy is smart, well-written, the performances are great from every cast member, this is a witty send-up of the Hollywood movie industry as Bobby Bowfinger goes all out to make his dream movie.

Galaxy Quest (1999) - Galaxy Quest was to Star Trek as Space Balls was to Star Wars, Space Balls was to the 1980s as Galaxy Quest was to the 1990s in terms of sci-fi- comedy spoofs. And like Mel Brooks's offering, this one also delivered the goods.

Mystery Men (1999) - peculiar superhero parody effort and based on the comics with an interesting ensemble line-up featuring Ben Stiller, William H. Macy, Hank Azaria (The Simpsons, The Birdcage), Greg Kinnear, Eddie Izzard and Geoffrey Rush. The film makes more sense if you are well familiar with the original source material. But other than that, this is a really refreshing take on the superhero movie.
